Introduction:
Our focus this summer is on the Letter to the Hebrews. We are getting to know God through Jesus. We are getting to know what God has done for us, is doing for us and will do for us.
Because Jesus is the revelation of God's actions in the world, our relationship with Him can be complex, with many different dimensions. Jesus is often referred to by a title, in addition to his name, to describe each of these types of relationships we have with him. In Hebrews, Jesus is referred to by 17 different titles, some of which are: Son, the Captain, Priest, Son of God, the Apostle, Son of Man, the Author, Christ, the Sanctifier, Lord and the Shepard. And this is just from one book of the Bible!
Yet there is one more title, which will be the focus of the message today, and that is High Priest. This title is a distinctive feature of Hebrews, because Jesus is not referred to as High Priest anywhere else in the New Testament. The essence of the High Priest is to form a link between humanity and God, and who is more qualified for this title than Jesus, who is both man and God? Jesus fully represents God to humanity, and humanity to God.
