Introduction:For residents of Wisconsin, it's pretty common for a fan of NFL football to be a supporter of the Green Bay Packers. The Packer fan base, however, is one of the largest in the league. How could that be? The Packers are located in, by far, the smallest population area of the United States...by a lot. The Green Bay metropolitan is four times smaller than the next two largest: New Orleans and Buffalo. That could very well be what makes the Packers so popular. Compared to every other team, they come from a small town. They are also the only professional sports franchise that is not owned by an individual or a small partnership of folks. There are no billionaires calling the shots for the Packers. They have shareholders...it's the fans that call the shots. Our reading from the prophet Micah tells of someone from the line of David, who will come from Bethlehem, that will shepherd the people. He will be one to bring peace. He won't come from Jerusalem. He won't come from some other important area...he'll come from Bethlehem a small town, under the radar. We believe that this one from Bethlehem, the shepherd and the bringer of peace is Jesus Christ. Why is it so important that Jesus come from Bethlehem? |
