John the HeraldSeries: So it is Written (2011) |
Sunday, March 20, 2011 | By Rom A. Pegram |
Introduction:
Today, our journey takes us from the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah ... to the banks of the Jordan River, where John the Baptizer (or Baptist) is busy dunking people in the Jordan and calling them to confess their sin, repent of their sin, and ask for God's forgiveness. His job--according to Isaiah, the prophet--was that of a herald. He had an important announcement to make to the world ... and today, we'll hear all about that announcement... Today, as we did last week, we'll continue to bear witness--through Isaiah--to a God who is faithful to speak a word not only to his people of their day through forthtelling (or preaching or teaching) ... but he is also faithful to speak to his people of our day through foretelling. Hopefully, you remember those terms from last week... The fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy comes at the River Jordan ... with John. He was Jesus' cousin. Jesus alluded to the fact that he was Elijah who had come to prophecy again (Matt. 11:14). We know him as the one who announced the coming of God in the flesh ... the Messiah.... |
