Hebrews on Holiday (Palm Sunday)

Series: So it is Written (2011)

Sunday, April 17, 2011 | By Rom A. Pegram

Introduction:

Wired for Worship WebAdOur Palm Sunday is the first day of a week-long Jewish festival known as "˜Passover.' Jesus' entry into the city of Jerusalem--a central part of our Palm Sunday story--was a part of that celebration in his day, too.

Passover celebrates the time when the Angel of Death (while the Hebrews were still in Egypt) "˜passed over' each home that had the blood of a sacrificial lamb painted on it. And, if you think about it, it's the best parallel ever ... for what God had in mind for Jesus, for he has been referred to as "˜The Lamb of God.' Just as the blood of the sacrificial lambs saved the Hebrews way back in Egypt, so too the blood of the sacrificial "˜Lamb of God'--through the crucifixion--is our salvation today!

This morning, we celebrate the beginning of the week that God gave his very best for us ... over 2,000 years ago! This is the day we begin to celebrate the fulfillment of Zechariah's prophecy ... about the coming of our King! ...
